According to the CDC, between the years 2013 and 2016, nearly 50% of American adults tried to lose weight in the past 12 months alone. I am sure we are all familiar with the weight-loss industry by now; it is one of the largest industries in the country, amassing a market size of nearly three billion dollars in 2022.

Unfortunately, with all of the products, methods, fad diets, and ploys out there, long-term weight loss success still seems to be something hard-won and endlessly sought.

While a larger discussion to be had revolves around what a healthy weight actually looks like — and specifically how that kind of weight may differ between individuals and at different times in their lives — in this short piece, I am simply going to share a piece of healthful eating advice that I find opposes some of the typical tropes of dieting and weight loss, specifically restrictive eating.

A lot of my experience with this is anecdotal, whether personally or otherwise, but I do think it is worth sharing.
